Exploring Photography Styles

When it comes to capturing life’s precious moments, there are two distinct approaches: lifestyle photography and studio photography. Both have their own benefits and unique characteristics, and the choice really depends on what you,

as a family, are looking for. Here are some key differences:

Natural Light and Outdoor Settings

Lifestyle photography makes the most of natural light, often shooting outdoors in beautiful locations such as parks, forests, or even in your own home. This approach creates soft, warm images that feel organic and authentic.

In a studio, photographers use artificial lighting, including flash, which can create dramatic effects but may also be harsh—especially for newborns who can be easily disturbed by bright flashes.

Personal Touch

One of the major advantages of lifestyle photography is the use of personal props and materials. This might include items from home, cherished family heirlooms, or everyday objects that tell your unique story. For newborn photography, we recommend using your own swaddling fabrics (i.e. cotton, muslin, etc.) in order to protect your baby’s delicate skin during the first few weeks of life, as well as for hygienic considerations.

Studios are often stocked with an array of props provided by the photographer. This can be great for achieving a specific look quickly, but it might not reflect your personal style or the warmth of your home environment.

Intimate and Comfortable

Shooting in familiar environments allows families to feel more at ease. Whether it’s in your living room or a favorite outdoor spot, the relaxed atmosphere helps capture those intimate, candid moments without the stress of a studio setup. With lifestyle photography, you have the flexibility to choose the setting that means the most to you. We believe that capturing moments in places that are personal to you brings out the true essence of your story.

The controlled conditions in a studio ensure consistent results regardless of the weather or time of day. This is a definite advantage if you’re looking for a very polished, uniform look.

Why We Choose Lifestyle Photography

At Daniels Løchen Fotografi, we choose to specialize in lifestyle photography because we prefer to capture intimate moments in the natural settings that are meaningful to you. We do not have a traditional studio because we believe that the most authentic and heartfelt photographs come from real-life environments—be it your home or a location that holds special memories, both indoors and outdoors.

While both lifestyle and studio photography have their pros and cons, it’s important to choose the approach that best fits you and your family's personality and needs. Whether you opt for the natural, personal touch of lifestyle photography or the controlled, classic look of studio photography, what matters most is that your memories are captured in a way that feels right for you! ♡
